Alexa Light Colors Meaning: Every Color Explained
The light ring on your Echo is how Alexa tells you what's going on, from a missed notification to a muted mic. Here's what each color and pattern means.
What the light ring means
| Light | What it means |
|---|---|
Pulsing yellow | You've got a message, a notification or a reminder you missed. Say "Alexa, what are my notifications?" to hear it. |
Solid red | The microphone is off, so Alexa isn't listening. Press the mic button again to turn it back on. |
Pulsing green | Someone's calling your Echo. Say "Answer call" to pick up. |
Spinning green | You're on a call or a Drop In right now. |
Blue with a cyan spot | Alexa is listening. When the ring glimmers for a moment after you stop talking, it's working on your request. |
Solid teal blue | Alexa is still listening, so you can keep talking without saying "Alexa" first. |
Spinning teal and blue | Your Echo is starting up, or restarting after a software update. Give it a minute. |
Spinning orange | It's in setup mode, or trying to connect to the internet. |
Purple flash | Do Not Disturb is on. You'll see it for a moment after you ask Alexa something. |
Purple during setup | Your Echo is having trouble with your Wi-Fi. |
White | You're changing the volume. The white part of the ring shows how loud it is. |
Other Echo speakers
These are the colors Amazon lists for its Echo speakers, and I've drawn the Echo Dot. The Echo Dot Max and the 2025 Echo Studio work a little differently: when Alexa is listening, you'll see two blue lights pulse on the left and right of the ring instead.
